Update: View the 2010 Mr. Handyman National Day of Service

Mr. Handyman’s franchisees are answering President Obama’s call for volunteerism. Just two short weeks after Franchisee Teddy Tenenbaum of Beverly Hills, Calif. asked his peers to participate in our first-ever National Day of Service on September 10, 2009, franchise owners have already pledged more than 368 hours (46 days!) of repair and maintenance service to charitable organizations across the United States and Canada.

A few charities receiving assistance from Mr. Handyman franchisees across the system are highlighted below:

Ted Tenenbaum and Los Angeles area owners Ed Reilly, David Silverman, Larry Prior and Michael Wirtes are teaming up to support the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles by performing accessibility and safety upgrades at homes, as well as emergency maintenance to improve the quality of living standards.

• Tina Gleisner, franchise owner of My Handyman of Southern New Hampshire plans to support the New Outlook Teen Center by working on building storage, including shelving for crafts and sports equipment.

• Minneapolis area owners Darrell Watkins, Sylvia Matijasevich, Gary Alick, Steve Brown and Brad Herbst are teaming up to support Teen Challenge, and plan to dedicate between five and seven technicians to the day.

Marc and Teresa McGee on Enola, Penn. are working with new franchisees and neighbors Chad and Kathy Price of Harrisburg, Penn. to support their local Rebuilding America.

• Colorado franchise owners Gary Mayle and Doug David are working with Angel House and Angel Village, who provide meals, mentoring and case management to homeless families with children. Donated services include exterior painting, door repairs, interior lockset replacements, a ceiling fan installation, dishwasher installation, tile grout repairs, wallpaper repairs, interior trim and installing some shelving.

• Michael McCalley, owner of Mr. Handyman in Orange Park, Fla. is donating time to Waste Not, Want Not, a charity collecting expiring food from supermarkets and distributes to food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Michael plans to work on the organization’s gutters and awning and complete some general repairs.

Special thanks to Ron Locandro of Simsbury, Conn. for recommending Rebuilding Together, a national charity for owners to support, if they want. The charity works to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. Their network of more than 200 affiliates provides free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of low-income Americans.

I am a 62 year old living on disability,I worked in the medical field for nearly 20 years, the strain of heavy lifting, walking on cement floors etc. forced me into disability.I am maintaining my house payment(barely). I can not pay for the repairs that are needed to make my home safe,I can’t always afford my medicine. My back door has a broken hinge at the top making closing the door kind of tricky. As you step into the hall there is pieces of wood to keep you from falling through,if you look to the right you can see the heater/ac unit that hasn’t worked in 6 years(i heat with space heaters and cool with fans). The wiring works most of the time, but sections of the house simply stop working then come back by themselves(spooky). If a fire were to break out the front door is not an option for escape because the front deck has fallen down and away from the house. If you can’t help me maybe you know somebody who can. I am desperate and afraid to sleep in my own home.Thank you and God bless. Juanita Cash
