A fresh coat of paint can do wonders, as most of you know. Whether you’re sprucing up old cabinets, updating a flea market find, or adding some flare to an accent chair, a quick coat of paint to furniture is a great budget-friendly way to update and modernize your home. Although painting furniture and other household items is a fairly common DIY home project, there are some crucial steps to keep in mind before you dive in.

  1. Remove any hardware: Although removing all the hardware off a dresser or cabinets may seem tedious, it will make the rest of the DIY project substantially easier. It will speed up the sanding process and create a seamless painting process that is more consistent when you aren’t having to paint around knobs and pulls.
  2. Patch any holes or inconsistencies: If you are working with wood, especially if the piece is antique or more than a few years old, chances are there will be inconsistencies in the wood. Use a wood filler to smooth out the nicks and holes before sanding.
  3. Degloss and prime: If your piece has a wax or gloss finish, you may need to use a deglosser before you prime. Basic paint deglossers can be found at any hardware or home improvement store. After deglossing, one coat of primer will do the trick for most pieces.
  4. Sand: After you have removed all hardware, your piece is free of holes and imperfections, and is completely gloss free, you should now be ready to sand. Sand the piece in its entirety-  make sure to be thorough. Proper preparation is the key to a successful paint job.
  5. Wash: Thoroughly wipe down your freshly sanded piece with warm soapy water. It is important to get rid of all the leftover dust and dirt before painting. Painting on top of a sandy or dusty piece will make the paint bubbly and messy.
  6. Paint: Now you’re ready for the fun part! Paint one or two coats (depending on the type and color of paint you choose) and make sure to let each coat dry for at least six hours. Tip: To get an antique look like the photo above, sand your piece in the corners and edges to create a distressed look.
  7. Sealant: Sealing your new and improved piece of furniture is the last step before you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Seal your project with one coat, leave to dry overnight, and you’re done!

Remember adding a personal touch can be a great way to show off your artistic flare. More importantly, get creative and have fun!

5 Must Have Details for a Master Bathroom Remodel

October 13, 2014

In many homes, the master bathroom simply serves its purpose. Turn yours into a space for resting and relaxation with a remodel that includes these five must-have details.

Radiant-Heat Flooring

bathroom interior 300x300 5 Must Have Details for a Master Bathroom RemodelBathroom floors are typically made of tile, a chilly material even during the summer months. Looking for your dog on a hot day? Check the rooms with tile.

Adding a radiant-heat system to flooring keeps your feet as well as your entire body warm because the heat has direct contact, instead of falling from above as with conventional systems. Because of this, radiant heat also proves more energy efficient.

Both electric and hydronic radiant-heat systems are available for floors, with the former costing less to install but more to use, making it a better choice for master baths than for larger rooms. Tile suits these systems best, as stone and ceramic conduct and maintain heat best and do not face temperature limitations like other materials, including wood. Concrete floors also suit radiant-heating systems.

No matter which system or material you choose, know that existing floors must be removed as the wires or hot-water tubes gets installed underneath.

Double Sinks

Imagine not having to share a sink with your significant other. No more reminders to rinse the bowl after teeth brushing. No more clutter around the sink because each person wants their supplies within reach. Many a relationship has been saved by double sinks in the master bathroom. If you have the room and money in the budget, go for it.

Big, Wall-to-Wall Mirrors

Not everyone has a boutique-style closet with large mirrors. If yours simply holds clothes, not allowing for a proper, well-lighted look, install wall-to-wall mirrors during your master bath remodel. The choice of wall covering also will make the space look much larger than it its.

Jacuzzi Tub

There are bath people and shower people, with the former convinced that the latter have just never experienced the benefits of a true soaking tub with Jacuzzi jets.

Jacuzzi tubs offer a multitude of benefits. A soak at the end of the day, relaxes the body and mind by relieving physical and emotional stress. A bath before bedtime also can help alleviate insomnia because it lowers your body temperature and helps you fall asleep more easily.

The soothing waters of a Jacuzzi tub also improve overall circulation, massage veins and arteries, and relieve joint pain and muscle strains. Proper placement of a jet in relation to an aching muscle results in a deep-tissue massage.

Dermatologists also recommend this bathroom feature as a way to create a higher level of oxygenation in the skin, which boosts production of collagen and elastin. The warm waters also encourage your body to sweat and detoxify.

Skylights

bathroom remodel double sinks skylight 300x226 5 Must Have Details for a Master Bathroom Remodel

Photo Credit: Wendy Bunch on Flickr

Did you know that skylights also have health benefits? Natural light provides a healthy dose of vitamin D, a deficiency of which can have negative effects on your mental and physical health. The light coming through a skylight in the master bath reduces mildew and mold buildup that can cause chronic respiratory problems.

Natural light also improves the appearance of a room as well as its energy efficiency and eco-friendliness. With sun spilling in from above during the day, you can skip turning on artificial lights. Combine moonlight and candlelight at night for an even more relaxing soak in that Jacuzzi tub.

While all of these features are a must-have for the master bath, consider picking and choosing if you are on a limited budget. You may decide that where you live, such as in Arizona, makes skylights more desirable than radiant-heat flooring. Your professional handyman can help you come up with the best possible remodel for your home.

Interior Painting: Fun Colors for Bedrooms and Bathrooms

October 11, 2014

The easiest way to give your bedroom or bathroom a new look is with paint.  It is affordable and is easily changeable if you don’t like the look.  The hardest part to picking a color palate is deciding which color to start with.  Here are a few tips to help transform your bedroom or bathroom into a fun space that you will love!

Be Bold and Beautifulblue bathroom iStock 000008773085XSmall 200x300 Interior Painting: Fun Colors for Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The newest trend in bedroom and bathroom color is the bolder the better. Neutral colors like beige and brown used to be a popular choices that have now been replaced by aqua green, orange and dark blue.  These bold new colors are motivating and create a cheerful place to wake up to in the morning. Often the best way to choose your bold new color is to become inspired by throw pillows, a shower curtain or another accent item in the room. You know you already love the color now you just need to expand on it.

Stay Neutral and Timeless

If you don’t want to commit to painting an entire room turquoise that is okay.  You can still add fun colors to your room without painting all four walls.  Paint just one wall a bold color like yellow or deep red and make it an accent wall.  Still too much commitment?  Try painting colored stripes on one wall with some of your favorite colors.  This is a great idea for a nursery or kids bedroom. Another trick is to add colorful accents throughout the room to give it a pop of color.

Fall Home Maintenance: Interior and Exterior Tips

October 7, 2014

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist 231x300 Fall Home Maintenance: Interior and Exterior TipsFall has arrived, and winter will be here before you know it. The drop in temperatures means it’s time to perform seasonal chores around the house. Download Mr. Handyman’s free fall home maintenance checklist and get started, whether you take the DIY route or assign out tasks. We also have winter, spring and summer maintenance checklists to keep handy for seasons to come.

Prepare the Outside of Your Home for Winter

If you live in an area of the country where the patio or deck pretty much closes, clean the furniture and store inside. Or you can cover it to protect fabrics from damaging winter weather.

Drain all garden hoses, roll up and remove any kinks, and store inside, as freezing temperatures can cause the hose to crack. Replace insulation on spigots as needed.

If you have trees and landscaping close to the house, trim branches back so they don’t brush against the house during storms. You also want to avoid having heavy branches fall and damage your home or car. Outsource this work if you do not have the necessary experience or equipment.

Now is also the time to fix any drainage issues you put off addressing in the summer months. Melting snow and ice should flow away from your home’s foundation, not puddle up next to it and potentially leak inside.

Inspect all gutters and drains on the property, removing any leaves and debris that has already gathered in them. You will want to do this every few weeks as the leaves fall to avoid a clog in your drainage system. Again, if you are not comfortable performing this task, as it requires ladder work and heights, assign it to your professional handyman.

Finally, fertilize your lawn. The roots will absorb the nutrients and use them throughout the winter months.

Inside Your Home

Fall is the perfect time to replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as in flashlights. Save partially used batteries to use up in other less vital roles, such as in the many kid’s toys that Santa will deliver.

Clean all light fixtures and replace any burned-out bulbs. Remember to set aside any light bulbs that contain mercury for recycling. Not only will you keep the harmful substance out of the soil, but the glass, metal, and other materials can be reused. If you live in California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Washington, you are prohibited by law from sending these bulbs to a landfill.

Drain your hot water heater and check for sediment, which can build up in the tank and decrease energy efficiency and also clog water lines. Your particular water heater will have come with instructions for performing this task, or outsource this job. This is also a good time to check its pressure valve.

furnace energy savings Fall Home Maintenance: Interior and Exterior TipsRemove and clean the filter in your furnace. If you’re still using disposable filters, upgrade this season and save money in the long run with a reusable one. They are also more efficient. No matter which you have, though, clean or replace it, as doing so can result in up to a 15 percent savings on your heating bill. Keeping insulation around your furnace in good shape also contributes to those savings.

Some of these tasks also fall on the winter home maintenance checklist. Perform as early as necessary depending on the temperatures in your area of the country. For example, some areas in the south can procrastinate for a few more weeks, while those in the north should not. Remember: Prevention costs much less than repairs.

  • Tips for Pumpkin Decorating With Kids
  • Pumpkin carving typically involves sharp tools, which are not kid friendly. There are other ways to get the little ones involved in decorating pumpkins, though.
  • Chalkboard Paint—This product available at your local home improvement store gives kids a creative outlet that does not involve knives. Simply give them a pumpkin, small roller brush and tray filled with the paint, and chalk. The best part of this craft? You don’t have to gut the pumpkin! Get more tips on using chalkboard paint to decorate pumpkins.
  • Cookie Cutters—Halloween-themed cookie cutters and a rubber mallet can also replace the need for sharp tools. After you cut off the top and empty the pumpkin, kids place the cookie cutter against the outside and tap with the mallet until it pokes through. Get more info on using cookie cutters to carve pumpkins.
  • Don’t Throw Out the Pumpkin Guts

While it might be tempting to toss what comes out of the pumpkin during carving, why not put the guts to use? You can make roasted pumpkin seeds. Pull off as much of the stringy mess as possible and place in a bowl. Mix with melted butter or olive oil for a plain seed, or you can go sweet with brown sugar or spicy with chili powder. Pop in the oven for 20 minutes or so at 375 degrees F, and you have a tasty treat for all ages.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

10 Man Cave Ideas for this Football Season

September 29, 2014

With football season in full force, it’s really time to consider getting the man cave you’ve always wanted. There are so many ideas to consider when looking into this addition. Below are Mr. Handyman’s must-haves for any man cave:

1. A Bar. Welcome to Man Cave 101. If you’re hoping to entertain guests, the bar is just the beginning.

2. Poker Table. Want a great way to multi-task in a manly way? Try playing poker while watching the football game. Take a gamble on this one.

3. Pool Table. It’s a safe bet to include anything that encourages smack talk and friendly competition. A game of pool generally does this.

4. Indoor Grill. How much manlier can you get? I mean really. Make sure to call the professionals for installation!

5. Cigar Humidor. Whether or not your wife will allow you to smoke cigars in the house (probably not), a humidor is a great addition to your man cave. Why? To show off your amazing collection of Cubans!

6. Large Flat Screen TV or Projector There is always an argument as to which of the two is better. A flat screen generally provides a clearer image, but projectors allow for gigantic picture. If you’re aiming for excessiveness, go with the projector.

7. Stadium Seating. Many people make the mistake of throwing a couch into an otherwise very impressive man cave. To achieve the full effect, build stadium seating with some nice recliners.

8. Arcade Games: Bring back childhood memories by adding arcade games to your man cave.

9. Putting Greens. Because why not?

10. Remove the Gym. If you have a gym in your man cave, tear it down and start over. This is a place for you to relax with your friends and avoid productivity. No gyms allowed.

6 Hot Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Exploring the Newest Material Choices

September 22, 2014

Most homeowners immediately think of ceramic tile or vinyl when considering new flooring for a bathroom – both work well in an environment that gets wet but there are other options. Let’s look at the tried-and-true flooring options along with a few you may not have considered.

Ceramic Tile

bathroom tile floor 6 Hot Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Exploring the Newest Material ChoicesBoth durable and hygienic, ceramic tile is a top choice for the bathroom. Be sure to pick a product rated as anti-slip and low porosity to keep the surface safe and resistant to mold. In terms of color and pattern, the choices are seemingly endless, allowing the floor to be as understated or bold an element in your décor as you desire.

Vinyl

This budget-friendly bathroom flooring comes as tiles, sheets, and sheets that look like tiles. Opt for either type of sheets, as the more pieces that make up flooring, the greater the potential for water to penetrate seams and cause mold growth. Vinyl also has a softer feel than ceramic, as you place padding between it and the subfloor.

Concrete

Photo Credit: Andy Franklin on Flickr

Another low-cost option, concrete can give your bathroom a modern, industrial look with a simple finish or resemble more expensive flooring through stenciling and stains. You already have a concrete sub-floor, so why not consider using it if it’s complementary to your home’s overall décor.

Ceramic, vinyl and concrete flooring are all low maintenance, with soap and water used for cleaning.

Glass

Homeowners who embrace eco-friendliness are choosing tiles made out of recycled glass as flooring for the bathroom. Like ceramic, the color and pattern choices are vast. Glass tiles tend to be smaller than ceramic and other materials, as the weight needs to be distributed over less of an area. Pick sandblasted tiles to reduce the slip factor.

Glass tile also offers low maintenance, as you clean it just like you would windows.

Bamboo or Cork

cork floor bathroom 228x300 6 Hot Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Exploring the Newest Material Choices

While wood floors are an option for bathroom floors if properly sealed and filled, Bamboo and Cork are a more sustainable choice as the materials grow much more quickly. Both naturally repel moisture and resist mold. Bamboo resembles wood more than cork, which has a softer feel.

Both bamboo and cork require only regular sweeping or dust mopping.

Note: While laminate “wood” offers the look of wood, it does not work well in bathrooms because of the moisture. Standing water will damage the material – and who doesn’t splash outside the shower or bathtub from time to time.

Carpet

For most homeowners, the thought of carpet in the bathroom seems not only impractical but also unsafe, as the material retains moisture and creates an excellent environment for mold growth. Enter modern modular carpet from companies such as FLOR. This particular product has an antimicrobial backing that inhibits mold growth. It also comes in solids and patterns and in a variety of colors and shapes.

Simply vacuum as you would any other carpet, and the modular aspect allows you to easily replace any square that gets a stain you can’t remove.

After you choose the best flooring for your bathroom, also give serious consideration to installation. While some of these materials can be done as DIY projects others require professional installation, among them wood and anything with tiles. You also might need help prepping the subfloor if switching from one material to another.

2014 National Day of Service Highlights

September 19, 2014

So far, 13 Mr. Handyman owners have completed their projects dedicated to the National Day of Service and Remembrance, and three others have committed to serving veterans in November, in honor of this annual effort.

Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia – Arlington to Haymarket and U.S. Army Veteran William Martin.

Jo McCabe, owner of Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia – Arlington to Haymarket, led the charge with this year’s effort. As a U.S. Navy Veteran, McCabe uses this event to rally her team of technicians’ talents and performed over 200 hours of free service at WWII veteran William Martin’s home. They replaced the kitchen floor, partially remodeled a bathroom, replaced the front gutter and several other interior and exterior maintenance projects. Martin served in the U.S. Army from 1942 – 1946.

“We are thrilled to have worked with Mr. Martin and his wife as part of Mr. Handyman’s National Day of Service campaign,” said McCabe, owner of Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia. “We always look for ways to give back to our community and we are excited to be a part of a national operation to help those in need.”

Highlights from other projects around the country were captured in local media outlets:

Bruce and Robin Foster, owners of Mr. Handyman of Western Wake County, donated their technicians’ time to the Garner Road Community Center. The project was covered by three television stations and they received a request for post-event photos from the Triangle Business Journal. Check out their segment, which aired on WRAL-TV and is also highlighted on the station’s website.

Allen Furrer, owner of Mr. Handyman of Southwest Florida, gave back to Doug Hale, a disabled veteran. His crew’s work was admired, photographed and shared in The News-Press.com and Lehigh Acres News Star. The online appearance also included a video interview allowing Furrer the chance to talk about Mr. Handyman and our National Day of Service.

Both the Capital Gazette and Bowie Blade-News were interested in Kevin Crysler and Diane McKinney’s return to the Bowie volunteer fire department. The photos and interview comments were prominently featured on the main page of the publication’s website.

The McKinney Courier-Gazette interviewed Kris Talley, as he and Cindy Parks-Talley gave the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary some much-needed improvement in a new interactive, children’s exhibit, planned to open in October.

Fun Projects to Make Your Child’s Room A Study Haven

September 16, 2014

Back to school means spending time in the car pool lane, packing sack lunches and homework.  Yes homework!  So how can you help your child be successful this year and stay ahead of the class?  Give them an area separate from the rest of the house that is dedicated to homework, like their bedroom.  Here are a few fun projects that can turn your child’s bedroom into a study haven:

Desk Space- A desk is the first building block to a great homework station.  You want to find a desk that fits properly in your child’s room but also provides an ample worktop space and storage for school supplies such as paper, pencils and erasers, etc.  If your childs room is smaller or if you are looking to save space, consider creating a reading loft with a desk underneath.

Bulletin Board – Providing you child with a bulletin board in their room will allow them the ability to showcase academic achievements and post reminders. Most bulletin boards are made of cork and can be a little boring.  Jazz up a traditional bulletin board by wrapping it in fabric, adding a frame or using a few smaller boards to create one large board.

Workspace Lighting – Lighting is an important part of a workstation that will allow your child to be productive and efficient.  Traditional desk lamps are useful but also consider hanging a strand of lights around your child’s desk to highlight their workspace.  It is a nice way to be creative and make the space fun.

Hanging Clipboards – A great way to personalize your child’s study space is to add hanging clipboards on their wall by their desk space.  They are a great way to keep your kids organized with upcoming assignments and can be bought in a variety of fun printed backgrounds.

Organization – The best way to be organized is to make it simple.  Add a towel rod to the wall with hooks to hang scissors or small buckets with markers and pens. You can also make a pencil container from a recycled can.  Simply paint the can or cover in ribbon for a one of a kind pencil holder. Also, don’t forget about a custom calendar to keep track of tests and big exams.  Use family photos or inspiring pics to create a calendar that keeps your child on track all while keeping them organized. Last but not lest add a shelf with decorative boxes and a few magazine files. Once you and your child start organizing your study haven it may be hard to stop!
